Is Your Heater Energy-Efficient?

As the seasons change and you fire up your heater, you are probably starting to think about the cost of heating your home, especially in winter. A recent article reports home heating costs are up due to natural gas costs being up 180%. Reduce your energy bill by up to 15% each month with regular system maintenance. Regular maintenance will keep your system clean and running efficiently and save you money, but how can you check if your HVAC system is energy efficient?

First, the age of your heater will be a strong indicator of its efficiency. Most HVAC systems last 15-20 years, but unfortunately, their efficiency declines 5% every year. Even with regular maintenance, the age of your heater will show over time.

Second, every heater has an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. AFUE is the best indicator of your heater's efficiency because it tells you how efficiently your heater converts fuel into energy. Therefore, the AFUE rating is an essential consideration for you when initially purchasing your heater.

Another rating you might consider is the ENERGY STAR Rating that most electronic appliances come with today. The more the stars, the more efficient your product is. You can use this rating to help compare models when purchasing a new system, or you can take a look at the rating on your existing heater.

Next, you compare your energy bills from one year to the next. While other factors for your energy costs come into play, your yearly differential might indicate how well your heater is running from one year to the next.

There are also a few changes you can make in your home to keep your home heating efficient. Consider these small changes to help you lower your heating cost and keep your system running efficiently.

  • Install reversible ceiling fans that will collect the warm air generated by your heater and pull it downwards, making the room warmer.

  • Invest in a good thermostat that will allow you to program your system to lower when you do not need the heat, such as when you are away or sleeping.

  • Check how airtight your windows and doors are. If you notice a draft, use sealing tape or caulk to stop heat from escaping into the outdoors.
